What is a niche perfume decant?

A niche perfume decant is a sample of a niche brand's perfume in a 1ml to 10ml glass vial or atomizer.

While both terms can be used interchangeably, these are their proper definitions.

Niche sample is often used when the perfume vial is received pre-filled, in branded packaging.

Niche perfume decant is usually used when a perfume sample is custom made from an authentic perfume bottle. This could be at a perfume counter, when there are no branded samples of a certain scent, or it could be from a authorized perfume decanter.

An authorized perfume decanter is a person or business who prepares perfume samples from authorized or authentic bottles. It is NOT a legal or regulated certification, but used to distinguish them from unauthorized decanters, who use counterfeit scents.

What makes a brand or perfume "niche"?

Niche perfume brands are houses that only produce fragrances. Guerlain, Parfums de Marly, and Creed are examples of niche brands.

Niche perfumes can be more experimental or may highlight a less popular ingredient. Often, they are created with perfume heads in mind versus the general public so they may feature rare ingredients or be inspired by eclectic smells.

Designer fragrance brands, on the other hand, create perfumes or colognes in addition to their main products. Dior, Tom Ford, and Chanel are just a few examples of popular designer brands.

Are niche perfumes better than designer scents?

No. They are merely different.

While niche scents are not "better" than designer perfumes, some people prefer niche brands to mainstream scents as there is more variety to choose from.

Designer brands often follow fashion trends or consumer demand. Smaller niche houses have more freedom to experiment and to create polarizing scents.
