Over the past 6 months, I’ve found myself drawn into a completely new corner of the beauty sphere - the history of cosmetics. This rabbit hole has opened up a path that blends beauty formulating and archaeology in an unexpected way.
After stumbling the work of Dora Goldsmith, a leading expert in ancient Egyptian scents and smellscapes, I was inspired to learn more about the perfumes of Ancient Egypt. Her approach and writing style immediately resonated with me, and she reminded me that fragrance is so much more than “just perfume”. It has always been deeply connected to culture and personal identity.
I was able to find Professor Goldsmith on Instagram and fortunate enough to attend her online lecture, as well as order her Egyptian Smell Kit and Mendesian Perfume Kit.
As I work through them this winter, I’ll be sharing everything here on the blog, from fun facts to the experience and process. As each kit is handcrafted by Dora in Germany, based on her own research and translations, they are only available to purchase through her directly (& hopefully the shop one day soon 😉)
How many parts this series will become, remains up in the air, but I’m excited to take you on a journey filled with creativity, a little research, and a lot of magic. ✨
